Topic open house for December!

Pick a date in December and give me a topic, and I'll say things about it. It can be anything you want; personal, fannish, work-related, political, favourite memories, travel, whatever.

I reserve the right to hand-wave at prompts that I don't feel equipped to meet.

So I've already missed a week of this but frankly I doubt I'm going to get any requests (almost tempted to post this on tumblr but I think that would defeat the purpose). I really need to get into a writing habit, so please request a thing! (And if anyone has one that they still want requests for, let me know~)

That one meme:

Pick up the book nearest to you. Turn to page 45. The first sentence there describes your sex life in 2012.

"[He would feel more] relaxed below the shop in Madame Lefoux's secret underground contrivance chamber."

I'm optimistically assuming this means secret steampunk lesbian shenanigans.

Apparently this meme was for World Book Day, which I missed, but Imma do it anyway.

The book(s) I am reading: I currently have checked out from the library: Inda by Sherwood Smith, Tongues of Serpents by Naomi Novik, Goblin Quest by Jim Hines, Sea of Wind by Fuyumi Ono, and The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon. Whether I will finish them depends on if I get over my reader's block. (What? That's totally a thing.)

The book I am writing: None. The only thing I am writing is the backstory of my death knight.

The book I love most: Currently I'm gonna go with the Smoke series by Tanya Huff, because they make me happy!

The last book I received as a gift: Smoke and Ashes by Tanya Huff.

The last book I gave as a gift: The first Vampire Diaries novel. Don't look at me like that, she asked for it!

The nearest book on my desk: My desk barely fits my monitor. The nearest book to my bed, where I am now (yay netbooks) is Cryoburn by Lois McMaster Bujold, which I...also have not read. /fail

• Post ten of any pictures currently on your hard drive that you think are self-expressive.
• NO CAPTIONS!!! It must be like we're speaking with images and we have to interpret your visual language just like we have to interpret your words.
• They must ALREADY be on your hard drive - no googling or flickr! They have to have been saved to your folders sometime in the past. They must be something you've saved there because it resonated with you for some reason.
• You do NOT have to answer any questions about any of your pictures if you don't want to. You can make them as mysterious as you like. Or you can explain them away as much as you like.

NSFW - porn! )
They are conveniently numbered so please ask about them!

I have nothing to say. Luckily, I have more memes!

Without looking at the questions below, choose six of your favorite anime or manga and number them.
1. Saiyuki
2. Vampire Game
3. Tactics
4. Wild Adapter
5. Suikoden III
6. RG Veda

Now choose six of your favorite anime/manga characters and number them too. No, this does not mean you can peek.
1. Yuuko (Holic)
2. Yoruichi (Bleach)
3. Gojyo (Saiyuki)
4. Sakura (CCS)
5. Hakkai (Saiyuki)
6. Doumeki (Holic)

I finally have the new omnibus edition of Clover, and it is gorgeous! It's definitely time for a re-read, which I'll do tonight probably because WoW keeps disconnecting me.

The problem with LiveJournal is that we think we're close, but really, we know nothing about each other.

So I want you to ask me something you think you should know about me, something that should be obvious, but you have no idea about, or something you've always been curious about but have never asked, or something completely silly that you'd like me to answer for kicks. No limits on the range of questions, either: ask me anything you want to know about, whether it's a fannish opinion or a question about a fic of mine or trivia about my real life or my thoughts on events in the offline world.

Ask away. Then post this in your LJ and find out what people don't know about you!

Meme time again.
Go here and look through random quotes until you find five that you think reflect who you are or what you believe. Or six, as the case may be.

He who knows does not speak.
He who speaks does not know.
Lao-tzu, The Way of Lao-tzu

In a way, staring into a computer screen is like staring into an eclipse. It's brilliant and you don't realize the damage until its too late.
Bruce Sterling

I feel that we read to learn new things, sure, absolutely, but more often than not, what we really get out of the good books we read is self- recognition. We read and discover stuff about life that we already knew, except that we didn't know we knew it until we read it in a particular book. And this self-recognition, this discovering ourselves in the writings of others can be very exciting, can make us feel a little less isolated inside our own thing and a little more connected to the larger world.
Richard Price, Samaritan

If you hate a person, you hate something in him that is a part of yourself. What isn't part of ourselves doesn't disturb us.
Herman Hesse

It's never too late to be who you might have been.
George Eliot (1819 - 1880)

Shake off all the fears of servile prejudices, under which weak minds are servilely crouched. Fix reason firmly in her seat, and call on her tribunal for every fact, every opinion. Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason than that of blindfolded fear.
Thomas Jefferson (1743 - 1826)

Once tagged by this entry, the assignment is to write a blog entry of some kind with six random facts about yourself. Then, pick six of your friends and tag them; no tag backs. This explanation should be included.

1. I should be doing my homework right now, but am instead fooling about on the internets. I need to get my math done, or mostly; I can read my English in the morning. I don't have enough room on my desk for all my math stuff.

2. It took me almost exactly three hours to drive home this morning. Incidentally, leaving cities during rush hour is tedious and I need to stop doing it. At least when I do it here I know which lane I need to be in.

3. I obviously don't have much to say about myself. Two of my library books (comics) are due tomorrow, but I am not going to turn them in because I haven't read them yet.

4. I am currently reading: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey, Tam Lin by Pamela Dean, Dreamland Japan: Writings on Modern Manga by Frederik L. Schodt, and V For Vendetta by Alan Moore.

5. I am caught up on four ongoing manga. These are: Saiyuki, Loveless, Tsubasa, and Holic. Actually five, if Saiyuki Gaiden counts seperately.

6. I never really understood all the Aragorn/Legolas fic before, but this weekend as I was watching the movies it sort of jumped out and smacked me in the head. Whatever, Legolas/Gimli is canon.

Consider yourselves tagged.

And for anyone who hasn't seen it: Discworld Cake.

PLEASE TO STOP USING "GAY" AS A NEGATIVE TERM. IT CONFUSES ME. When I see someone say "That movie was gay," I think "La, a movie containing homosexuality. I wonder if it has boys kissing? ...Perhaps I should see it" or "Really, I didn't think it was that slashy" until I realize what they mean and then I am terribly disappointed. I assure you, it is a terrible thing when I am disappointed: my eyes fill with tears, my lip wobbles pathetically, and I must weep piteously, "Why do people use such a term? Do they not realize that it really is anti-gay, no, really, I don't care if you don't mean it that way, think about it, what if I said "That's so black" whenever I thought something was stupid? Are you telling me that's not racist? I don't care if you're gay either, stop using it, it offends me." And while it may be difficult to change an ingrained speech pattern, there is absolutely no excuse to use it in writing. I have a confession, dear readers: in speech I often call things "retarded". I do try not to, but I have yet to find another word that so easily conveys the depths of my disdain for something. Yet I never use it in writing, not even in casual IM conversations with my less refined interweb friends. Typing a word out gives you that extra second to reflect, to think "This word is uncouth, and t'would reflect poorly upon me to use it" and to change your term to something more acceptable.

Okay I should be in bed now, but I just finished Veronica Mars season 2 ohmygod. I was right about who it was, damn you spoiler person, but I was still surprised by, uh, EVERYTHING ELSE how am I supposed to sleep? And why don't I have a Veronica Mars icon?

Um. yes. Okay! From the meme:

OKAY DILEMMA. It's about time to change my desktop background, and I have a lovely one I want to use, but I'm afraid if I have two scantily-clad-women backgrounds in a row my dad is going to start asking questions. What to do?

[Poll #791206]
Results may or may not affect what I call my car.

Also, I know none of you will do this, but, a meme:
Leave a list of fictional characters in your journal that you would love to get a message from. It is your friend-list's mission, should they choose to accept it, to write you an in-character "letter" from a character on that list. Then they post their own list in their journal and the process continues! (Feel free to post anonymously too.)
And note if you do it anonymous I promise not to try to match the ip address.

Hakkai (Saiyuki)
Gojyo (Saiyuki)

Orihime (Bleach)
Morrolan (Dragaera)
Aliera (Dragaera)
Sethra (Dragaera)

(Click here to post your own answers for this meme.)

× I miss somebody right now. I don't watch much TV these days.  (Though more when I'm with my sisters.) I own lots of books.  (Yet never enough.)
I wear glasses or contact lenses. I love to play video games.  (Love is a strong word.) × I've tried marijuana.
I've watched porn movies. × I have been the psycho-ex in a past relationship. I believe honesty is usually the best policy.  (Doesn't mean I'll follow it.)
I curse sometimes.  (A lot.) × I have changed a lot mentally over the last year. × I carry my knife/razor everywhere with me.
tl;dr )
Kinda working on a trip post. Don't really feel like writing.

List up to ten (10) things you want to say to ten (10) different people. Do not state who these people are. Do not confirm or deny any 'comment speculation.'

1. We don't talk as often, and I miss it, but I still feel awkward about IMing you.

2. It's amazing that we like the same things, but extremely different things about them.

3. I don't want you to lose your respect for me, if you have any.

4. It's not that I don't trust you, I just think that you're susceptible to peer pressure. And I don't trust your friends.

5. Capitalizing words isn't that difficult or time-consuming, I promise.

6. I'm sorry I don't comment; I enjoy reading your journal and your fic/art. (This one applies to at least five people.)

7. That icon offended me, but it's not my place to ask you not to use it.

8. Using "gay" as an insult offends me, and I wish you wouldn't do it. I don't care what makes you think it's okay for you personally to do so.

9. Your more normal reactions to things make me feel like a freak.

10. I wish we hadn't stopped talking.
